Secondary School

    • In Belgium, secondary education is provided for youngsters from 12 to 18.
    • In the French Community (including the Brussels Region), full-time secondary education contains three Stages and various types of education (general, technical, artistic and vocational).
    • Each Stage consists of two Grades (school years). In the first Stage of secondary education, a common curriculum is proposed. Pupils can make a “pre-vocational” choice of study only at the start of the second Stage. In the third Stage of vocational secondary education, the successful completion of a third Grade is necessary to obtain the certificate of secondary education.
    • In Flanders (including the Brussels Region) a pupil chooses a course of study within one of the following types of education: general, technical, arts and vocational.
    • In Belgium, a certificate of upper secondary education grants unrestricted access to higher education.
How to Enroll?

The child can start in 1st grade A if:

  • He/she were granted a primary education certificate (or equivalent)
  • He/she attended the 6th grade of primary school, did not pass but did receive favorable advice from the class council and the CLB (Pupil Guidance Centre)
  • He/she is admitted on the basis of a screening by the admissions class council

The child can start in 1st grade B if:

  • He/she attended the 6th grade of primary school but failed to pass
  • He/she did not attend the 6th grade of primary school but will be turning 12 years of age on 31 December of the school year in question at the latest

1st grade B caters to youngsters who have fallen behind or who prefer to learn by doing. After 1st grade B, pupils can either go to the pre-vocational year or 1st grade A.

Disabled children can also go to special secondary education.
