Primary School

    • Primary education is targeted at children from 6 to 12 years old and comprises six subsequent school years.
    • A child usually starts primary education when it is six years old and thus obliged to engage in education.
    • When successfully completing primary education, children are granted a certificate.
How to enroll?

Depending on the network (French community, municipal, provincial, catholic, etc.), and even sometimes depending on the school, pre-registration deadlines and rules (online, by phone call...) may differ and it is up to the parents to inquire by themselves, depending on their priorities, location, etc.

Without prejudice to the regulations in force, priority is generally given to pupils who:

  • Pre-enrolled early
  • Are domiciled near the school

Keep in mind that in the Brussels area especially, the most sought-after schools are usually full well in advance. It is possible to pre-register in several schools to optimize the subsequent possibilities of choice.

When to enroll?
  • At the latest, the 1st working day of September
  • There are derogations for late registration in some specific cases

The dates mentioned above are the legal deadlines for registration. In practice, the registration process (pre-registration) starts well in advance.

Is it necessary to re-register each year? No, the minor child is automatically re-enrolled from year to year except in case of school change.
